Chickadee Readers teach your kids to love reading.

The Chickadee Bundle features all four of the My First Stories boxed sets. It also includes a deck of Pre-K Phonics flashcards (covering short vowels, long vowels, and every consonant), plus a Map to Reading poster to track your child’s progress (complete with 40 unique stickers).

The bundle is designed for rising kindergarteners who are ready to learn to read, or for 1st-graders who would like more reading practice. The books progress slowly and steadily through basic phonics: over the course of the four sets, the books move from Lexile Measure 80L to 560L. Your child will learn short vowels, long vowelsand consonant blends, and then practice putting all of it together to make long stories. Along the way there’s plenty of review, so everything your child learns stays learned.

With colorful illustrations, rollicking stories, and whimsical characters, the Chickadee Bundle will nurture a lifelong love for books.

How Chickadee Works

Classic Illustrations

Remember when kids books were well-drawn? Our kids deserve better than throw-away, black and white stick figures and lazy artwork. Each reader is beautifully illustrated by Mark Beauchamp.

Story Grip

Just because a story is for kids doesn't mean they have to be dumb. Chickadee set out to engage young kids with real stories with beginnings, middles, and ends.

Stair-step phonics

Every story and every book builds on the last. With lessons carefully crafted by highly experienced teachers, Chickadee sets a manageable pace of learning.

Chickadee teaches your kids how to sound out words by focusing on key phonics sounds and moving from simple to more complex sentences — without boring the new reader!

Real learning. Real fun.

I love these books. They are so fun and well written. Even my older children (middle school aged) enjoy listening to me read them to my preschooler.

Kid tested... mother appoved!

My kindergarten daughter initially wrinkled her nose at my "gift." She didn't want another set of "those books". After reading one together though, we were both surprised at how different they are! Phonics is phonics, but these seem more fun! The illustrations are lighthearted and had this mama smiling for real. Thank you!!

Good Word Choices, but Plots are Flat and Men are Stupid?

The structuring of the books is great for teaching a child to read. We go from short a to short o, etc, then mix them together before moving on to long a then long o, etc. Exactly what they need.

These books are supposed to be more interesting than Bob Books, and they are (since Bob Books are terrible), but there is still much room for a better story. How about speech bubbles and exclamations, funny jokes and plot twists? I know we're limited by phonics here, but I think it's doable. For now, these are fine.
_______
I was a bit disappointed in "Dad and the Lads." Dad and the boys run out of gas and get a flat tire, and Dad is too stupid or unprepared to fix it himself, so Mom comes to the rescue to bring gas and tools to fix the problems. I am disappointed in Canon Press for publishing a story where men are shamed, women are capable, and gender role reversal is the solution. We have enough literature like that out in the world, and I think Canon Press needs to be more careful in standing up for family values.
