How Chickadee Works

Classic Illustrations

Remember when kids books were well-drawn? Our kids deserve better than throw-away, black and white stick figures and lazy artwork. Each reader is beautifully illustrated by Mark Beauchamp.

Story Grip

Just because a story is for kids doesn't mean they have to be dumb. Chickadee set out to engage young kids with real stories with beginnings, middles, and ends.

Stair-step phonics

Every story and every book builds on the last. With lessons carefully crafted by highly experienced teachers, Chickadee sets a manageable pace of learning.

Chickadee teaches your kids how to sound out words by focusing on key phonics sounds and moving from simple to more complex sentences — without boring the new reader!

Real learning. Real fun.

Kid tested... mother appoved!

My kindergarten daughter initially wrinkled her nose at my "gift." She didn't want another set of "those books". After reading one together though, we were both surprised at how different they are! Phonics is phonics, but these seem more fun! The illustrations are lighthearted and had this mama smiling for real. Thank you!!

Good Word Choices, but Plots are Flat and Men are Stupid?

The structuring of the books is great for teaching a child to read. We go from short a to short o, etc, then mix them together before moving on to long a then long o, etc. Exactly what they need.
_______
These books are supposed to be more interesting than Bob Books, and they are (since Bob Books are terrible), but there is still much room for a better story. How about speech bubbles and exclamations, funny jokes and plot twists? I know we're limited by phonics here, but I think it's doable. For now, these are fine.
_______
I was a bit disappointed in "Dad and the Lads." Dad and the boys run out of gas and get a flat tire, and Dad is too stupid or unprepared to fix it himself, so Mom comes to the rescue to bring gas and tools to fix the problems. I am disappointed in Canon Press for publishing a story where men are shamed, women are capable, and gender role reversal is the solution. We have enough literature like that out in the world, and I think Canon Press needs to be more careful in standing up for family values.

Perfect for our children

We got these to use as homeschool materials and reading practice for our girls as they get older. Our eldest loves the read along tv series now. The books are short and sweet, but the simplicity is still engaging. So even though the girls aren’t reading yet, they love sitting down as we read to them. Plus there’s not much cuter than a 3 year old saying “Rus and Gus”. Thank you!
